All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has been established by an Act of Parliament (52 of 1987) for proper planning and coordinated and integrated development of technical education and regulation and maintenance of norms & standards in the technical education system throughout the country. The courses/programmes offered in Engineering & Technology, Management, Computer Applications, Architectures Town Planning, Pharmacy, Hotel Management & Catering Technology, Applied Arts and Crafts, come under the purview of AICTE. The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has issued show-cause notice to 105 technical institutions for failing to comply with its norms and regulations.
Owing to the faculty deficiency in 404 other institutions, 27,273 seats including 22,722 engineering seats have been reduced by the council. Around 45 other institutions have been put under "no admission" category.
Over 3,270 institutions processed for extension of approval by the council on 2nd May 06.
"Those institutions whose seats have been reduced are given an opportunity to rectify the deficiencies and submit a compliance report by May 31. We will examine the report

The All-India Council for Technical Education, which regulates professional institutes, has decided to reduce student intake in colleges, which does not have adequate faculty members. Out of the total 38,101 seats slashed this year, 25,335 are in engineering, 8,229 in MCA, 3,016 in MBA and post-graduate diploma in business management (PGDBM) and 1,521 in pharmacy courses, The all-India student intake for engineering (in AICTE-approved institutes) is going to be 4,52,260 this year against the 4,77,595 seats sanctioned last year. For the first time the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) is conducting a Common Entrance Exams (CET) for diploma holders seeking admissions to the second year of professional degree courses in engineering and pharmacy.
