Colleges Can Take In Non-CEFT Qualifiers

The Supreme Court on 23 Sept 05 has permitted member colleges of the All India Medical and Engineering Colleges Association to admit students on the basis of their 10+2 marks to engineering seats left vacant after the accommodation of all Common Entrance Test (CET) qualifiers. However, these 1,560 colleges will have to abide by the higher standards, if any, prescribed by the governments of the states in which they are located. There are at least 12,000 vacant engineering seats in these colleges. A Supreme Court Bench comprising Justices Y.K. Sabharwal arid C.K. Thakker gave the order on an application filed by the association seeking modification of an earlier order passed by the court. These private colleges, both minority and non-minority, had alleged that there was a scarcity of CET qualifiers as several deemed universities had taken in more students than their infrastructure permitted. They had also said that if the 12,000 seats went vacant, they would suffer huge financial losses. They had, thus, sought a onetime permission to take in students otherwise eligible and qualified on the basis of their 10+2 marks even though they had not taken the CET conducted by the respective states.

Medical entrance test cancelled, no explanation given for cancellation

Around 700 candidates for a medical entrance test went through a harrowing ordeal after their exam was cancelled today for unexplained reasons in the Jogomaya College which was the venue for the eastern region. The examination, ASSO-CET 2007, is organised by the Maharashtra-based Association of Managements of Unaided Private Medical and Dental Colleges (AMUPMDC).

The ASSO-CET is conducted for admissions to seats in private medical and dental colleges in Maharashtra. With the exam scheduled to begin at 2 pm today, the candidates reached the venue on time only to find the gates of Jogomaya College shut.

We had been left in the lurch as none of the college authorities or those from the AMUPMDC had stepped out to inform us about the delay. At 3.30 pm they merely put up a notice saying the exam had been cancelled without giving any reasons, said Amrita Pritam who has come all the way from Bihar to appear for the exam.

DCCC students head back to school

lasses at Delaware County Community College resumed Wednesday, nearly one week after e-mailed threats of violence forced a lockdown at all five campuses. Stephanie Favano, second-year psychology major from Springfield, arrived at the colleges main campus at about 8 a.m. to find additional police officers and security measures in place.

Only the main door is open, the side doors are closed and locked, she said. Some friends of mine got searched.

Students and staff were prohibited from bringing backpacks andpocketbooks into classroom buildings. For Favano, the threats and subsequent security measures made her somewhat uncomfortable.
