Courses to Create Professionals the Industry Needs Most:

The two-year full-time Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGPM) is the flagship course of ASB which provides a firm general management foundation as good as the best management foundation as good as the best management education in this part of the world. Director, institute of microbial technology, invites applications from exceptionally motivated candidates to pursue research at IMTECH leading to the award of Ph.D. degree of the Jawaharlal Nehru University. IMTECH is a multidisciplinary institute with excellent research facilites, state of the art computer and library facilities, and faculty with interests in many different areas. For this year’s admission, openings are only available in the areas mentioned below.

Group A: Molecular/Cellular Biology & Biotechnology

Sub-areas: Molecular Biology:molecular biology of pathogens, gene silencing, stress tolerance, signal transduction, gene expression, and genome-wide analysis. Cell biology & immunology: host-pathogen interactions, TB vaccine development, t-and b-cell activation, infectious agents & vaccine targets, cell structure & microscopy. Protein science & engineering: structure-function relationship, folding, aggregation and stability, design, expression, structural analysis and modeling. Applied microbiology: microbial diversity, environmental biotechnology, biotransformation, vaccines, extremophiles and their metabolites.

Group B: BioOrganic Chemistry & Biochemical Engineering

Sub-areas: Bioorganic Chemistry: ehzymes and abzymes in organic synthesis, Biocatalysis and bioactive molecules. Peptide chemistry: peptide synthesis, conformational charaterization and modeling. Biochemical engineering: fermentation & downstream processing, process development. Protein crystallography: protein crystallization, structure determination and structure-based drug designing. Biosensor: immunodiagnostics of pesticides and other environmental pollutants based on bioprobe-electronic interfacing.

Eligibility And Selection:

Candidates with master degree or equivalent with minimum of 55% marks in any branch of science (physics, chemistry, life sciences, microbiology, botany, zoology, physiology, biochemistry, biophysics, biotechnology, medical, pharmaceutical NET (either CSIR or UGC) or equivalent examinations providing fellowship (either ICMR or DBT) are eligible to apply. Applications must indicate their broad choice of research area in terms of the areas listed above under groups a and b (only one group should be indicated). Furthermore, they should specify different sub-areas of interest within the chosen group, in order of preference. Short listed candidates will be called for written test(if necessary) and interview, likely to held in 2nd / 3rd week of July at IMTECH. No TA/DA or any other expenses will be paid for appearing in the interview. Candidates whose result for qualifying examination is awaited may also apply; however they will be allow to appear in the interview only after they produce a valid proof of having passed the qualifying examination (e.g. a letter from the relevant head of department). Candidates must also state their present occupation, if any, in the application. Age limit: 28 years (age is applicable to SC/ST and OBC candidates as per govt. of India rule). The decision of the director, IMTECH regarding selection/admission of the candidates shall be final.

Residential Accommodation:

Separate hostel accommodation for boys and girls in the campus may be provided to the admitted candidates, if available. However, availability this year is likely to be low, and selected candidates may be required to stay off-campus.

Marks obtained in M.Sc part I and II, name of institute, date of passing and subjects studied along your passport size photograph and with attested copies of a) all certificates (school leaving, B.Sc., M.Sc., etc), b) proof of passing NET or equivalent examination (a copy of certificate or roll number along with newspaper clipping showing result with roll number highlighted) and application fee of Rs.100/- (no application fee for SC/ST candidates) by means of demand draft in favour of director, IMTECH and payable at Chandigarh (application fee is non-refundable). Reservation as per rules will be applicable to SC/ST candidates.

Applications are invited for admission to Ph.D. Degree from Non- Stipendiary candidates

For Full-time/Part-time Programme in the Departments of the University, Colleges affiliated to this University and recognized Research Institutions in Arts, languages, Humanities, Social Sciences, Sciences and Basic Medical Sciences for July 2006 Session.

To facilitate a time bound approach admission to Ph.D. Programme, admission could be made four times in a year (i.e.) in January, April, July and October of every calendar year. Candidates should submit their applications on the first working day of a quarter viz., January, April, July and October.

Eligibility:

The teachers from University Departments /affiliated colleges are also informed that they should apply for admission to Ph.D. Programme in the above sessions.

Candidates with fellowships from funding agencies like UGC, CSIR, GATE etc., and project fellows could register at any time of the year. Candidates belonging to SC/ST are exempted from payment of application cost, as well as Registration fees subject to the production of attested Xerox Copy of community certificate issued by the competent authority.

Full-Time Candidates:

A Candidate should have obtained a Master’s Degree with not less than Second Class or equivalent Grade. In the case of examinations, where classification does not exist, a minimum of 50% marks is needed in the qualifying examination.

A Candidate should pass an Entrance Examination (written and oral) administered by duly constituted committee of the Department in the University or of an affiliated college where the candidate proposes to undergo Ph.D. programme.

Part-Time Candidates:

A Teacher working in the Department of the University or an affiliated college of the University or Higher Secondary School or High School or Polytechnic within the territorial jurisdiction and with a qualifying degree fulfilling the above eligibility can apply.

A Candidate employed other than as a teacher in a permanent job, within the territorial jurisdiction of this University with a minimum of four years of total working experience Put in continuously with the qualifying degree and satisfying the rules framed separately by the Syndicate from time to time with the above eligibility can apply.

Application forms (both permission and registration) can be had from the University enquiry Office on payment of Rs.260/- by way of an Account Payee Demand Draft from any Nationalized Bank drawn in favour of the “The Registrar, University of Madras, Chennai - 600 005″ along with the requisition letter, Postal Order and Money Order will not be accepted. Self addressed stamped envelope for Rs.12/- should accompany the requisition for application from through post.

Filled in application (Application Form for Admission to Ph.D. Programme only) along with attested Xerox copies of all the certificates should be sent directly to the Head of the Department of the University /Principal of the College/Director of Research Institution concerned and not to the Registrar, University of Madras.

The date of issue of application is 1st June to 30th June 2006 for July session; 1st September to 30th September 2006 for Oct.2006 session; 1st December to 31st December 2006 for January 2007 session and 1st March to 31st March 2007 for April 2007 session. The last date for receipt of filled-in applications is 1st July 2006 for July session, 1st October 2006 for October session, 1st January 2007 for January session 1st April 2007 for April session. The University reserves the right not to conduct any of the above courses, if the circumstances so warrant.
