The rat race for Common Admission Test (CAT) is nearly two-lakh strong and growing at over 20% annually. With the number of CAT applicants likely to touch 3.5 lakh in the next five years, the institutes offering preparatory courses are aggressively expanding their presence. The coaching class industry for CAT and other entrance exams for B-schools is estimated at over Rs 500 crore.

According to industry estimates, about 60% of CAT applicants in urban and semi-urban areas opt for coaching classes. The aspirants do not mind shelling out Rs 10,000-25,000 to take coaching for cracking CAT. Apart from six IIMs, more than 80 other B-schools consider CAT score for their admission process.

The market for players like Time, Professional Tutorials (PT), IMS, Career Forum and Career Launcher is not limited only to major cities. Smaller towns are also emerging rapidly on their radar.

With the much-awaited GUJCET (Gujarat Common Entrance Test) to be conducted today, students here are quite anxious about it. While some have taken to coaching classes, others are going through their school textbooks for the admissions into Engineering, Medical and Pharmacy colleges in the State.

Rashmi Ramesh, a student of Asia English School, talks about her preparations, I am preparing for GUJCET by going through the formulae for Maths. For other subjects like Chemistry and Physics, I am referring my textbooks. I am not worried about the OMR system to be used in the exam as I have already appeared for Kerala Common Entrance Test (CET) and AIEEE in which OMR sheets are used

Sonia Sharma, a student of St Xaviers High School, Hansol however has another point of view. She says, One cannot prepare for GUJCET in a day or two since it is meant to evaluate what one has studied the entire year. Thats the reason why I am not worried about the exams. Sharma points out that although she is not attending coaching classes, she has been referring to her textbooks for the same.

Fellow Program in Management(FPM)
Executive Fellow Program in Management(EFPM)

The Fellow Programme in Management (FPM) is the doctoral level programme of MDI. The objective of the Fellow Programme is to provide high quality management education to develop outstanding scholars, who wish to pursue a career in research and teaching in the field of management.

MDI is looking for candidates with a consistently good academic record, professional accomplishments and strong urge to contribute to the process of knowledge creation and dissemination in the field of management.

The Programme:

FPM is a residential programme and would take approximately three to four years to complete. EFPM is largely a non-residential programme (open to candidates only from National Capital Region) and would take approximately four to five years to complete. The students are expected to undergo course work and submit a thesis at the end of the programme.

Area of Specialization:

Finance, Human Behaviour Organization Development, Human Resource Management, Information Management, Marketing, Operations Management and Strategic Management.

Eligibility for Fellow Programme Management:

Candidates should have a Master’s degree or equivalent diploma in Business Management with a minimum of 55% marks in the qualifying examination. Candidates with master’s qualifications in a functional management area, such as finance (MFC), business economics (MBE), human resource management (HRM) may also be considered eligible for specialization in that area, if they satisfy other requirements.

Additional requirement for EFPM:

Candidates applying for EFPM need to have a minimum of 10 years of managerial / executive work experience. Also the minimum age limit is 35 years as on 31st March 2006.

Financial Assistance:

FPM students shall be provided with financial assistance of Rs. 13,000/- (Rupees Thirteen Thousand only) per month for a maximum period of 3 years. However, for EFPM fee payable by the student is Rs. 40,000/- per annum.

Selection:

Candidates who wish to be considered for FPM / EFPM are invited to submit a detailed application in the prescribed form available from the institute. The form can be downloaded from MDI’s website. All short-listed candidates would be called for the test and interview process for final selection at MDI Campus.

How to Apply:

The Information Brochure and Application Form shall be available on payment of Rs. 1300/- in cash or by sending a crossed demand draft of Rs. 1350/- in favour of the Management Development Institute payable at New Delhi from 31st January to 31st March 2006. The last date for receipt of filled in application forms is 6th April 2006.
