Engineering Services Examination : Eligibility Conditions

1. Nationality

A candidate must be either:

a. a citizen of India, or
b. a subject of Nepal, or
c. a subject of Bhutan, or
d. a Tibetan refugee who came over to Indian before the 1st January, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or
e. a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka or East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia or from Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (b), (c), (d) and (e) above shall be a person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India.

A candidate in whose case a certificate of eligibility is necessary, may be admitted to the examination but the offer of appointment may be given only after the necessary eligibility certificate has been issued by the Government of India.

ii. Age Limits

a. A candidate for this examination must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 30 years on the 1st August, 2004 i.e. he must have been born not earlier than 2nd August, 1974 and not later than 1st August, 1983.

b. The upper age-limit of 30 years will be relaxable upto 35 years in the case of Government servants of the following categories, if they are employed in a Department/Office under the control of any of the authorities mentioned in column 1 below and apply for admission to the examination for all or any of the Service(s)/Posts mentioned in column 2, for which they are otherwise eligible.

i. A candidate who holds substantively a permanent post in the particular Department/Office concerned. This relaxation will not be admissible to a probationer appointed against a permanent post in the Department/Office during the period of his probation.

ii.A candidate who has been continuously in a temporary service on a regular basis in the particular Department/Office for at least 3 years on the 1st August, 2004.

The period of apprenticeship if followed by appointment against a working posts on the Railways may be treated as Railway Service for the purpose of age concession.

c. The upper age-limit prescribed above will be further relaxable

i. Upto a maximum of five years if a candidate belongs to a Scheduled Caste or a Scheduled Tribe;

ii. Upto a maximum of three years in the case of candidates belonging to Other Backward Classes who are eligible to avail of reservation applicable to such candidates.

iii. Upto a maximum of five years if a candidate had ordinarily been domiciled in the State of Jammu & Kashmir during the period from the 1st January, 1980 to the 31st day of December, 1989.

iv. Upto a maximum of three years in the case of Defence Service personnel disabled in operations during hostilities with any foreign country or in a disturbed area, and released as a consequence thereof;

v. Upto a maximum of five years in the case of ex-servicemen including Commissioned Officers and ECOs/SSCOs who have rendered at least five years Military Service as on 1st August, 2004 and have been released (i) on completion of assignment (including those whose assignment is due to be completed within one year from 1st August, 2004) otherwise than by way of dismissal or discharge on account of misconduct or inefficiency, or (ii) on account of physical disability attributable to Military Service or (iii) on invalidment;

vi. Upto a maximum of five years in the case of ECOs/SSCOs who have completed an initial period of assignment of five years of Military Services as on 1st August, 2004 and whose assignment has been extended beyond five years and in whose case the Ministry of Defence issues a certificate that they can apply for civil employment and they will be released on three months notice on selection from the date of receipt of offer of appointment.

vii.Upto a maximum of 10 years in the case of blind, deaf-mute and Orthopaedically handicapped persons.

Candidates belonging to the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes and the Other Backward Classes who are also covered under any other clauses of Para 3 (II)(c) above, viz. those coming under the category of Ex-servicemen, persons domiciled in the State of J & K, blind, deaf-mute and orthopaedically handicapped etc. will be eligible for grant of cumulative age-relaxation under both the categories.

The term ex-servicemen will apply to the persons who are defined as ex-servicemen in the Ex-servicemen (Re-employment in Civil Services and Posts) Rules, 1979, as amended from time to time.

The age concession under Para 3(II)(c)(v) and (vi) will not be admissible to Ex-Servicemen and Commissioned Officers including ECOs/SSCOs, who are released on own request.

Notwithstanding, the provision of age-relaxation under Para 3(II)(c)(vii) above, a physically handicapped candidate will be considered to be eligible for appointment only if he/she (after such physical examination as the Government or appointing authority, as the case may be, may prescribe) is found to satisfy the requirement of physical and medical standards for the concerned Services/posts to be allocated to the physically handicapped candidates by the Government.

N.B.The candidature of a person who is admitted to the examination under the age concession mentioned in Para 3(II)(b) above shall be cancelled if, after submitting his application he resigns from service or his services are terminated by his department/office either before or after taking the examination. He will, however, continue to be eligible if he is retrenched from the Service or post after submitting his application. A candidate who after submitting his application to the department is transferred to other department/office will be eligible to compete under departmental age concession for the Service/posts for which he would have been eligible but for his transfer, provided his application has been forwarded by his parent department.

Save As Provided Above The Age Limits Prescribed Can In No Case Be Relaxed.

The date of birth accepted by the Commission is that entered in the Matriculation or Secondary School Leaving Certificate or in a certificate recognised by an Indian University as equivalent to matriculation or in an extract from a Register of matriculates maintained by a University, which extract must be certified by the proper authority of the University or in the Higher Secondary or an equivalent examination certificate. These certificates are required to be submitted along with the detailed applications which will be required to be submitted by the candidates who qualify on the result of the written part of the examination.

No other document relating to age like horoscopes, affidavits, birth extracts from Municipal Corporation, service records and the like will be accepted.

The expression Matriculation/Secondary Examination Certificate in this part of the instruction includes the alternative certificates mentioned above.

Candidates should note that only the date of birth as recorded in the matriculation/secondary examination certificate or an equivalent certificate on the date of submission of application will be accepted by the commission and no subsequent request for its change will be considered or granted.

Candidates should also note that once a date of birth has been claimed by the them and entered in the records of the commission for the purpose of admission to an examination, no change will be allowed subsequently (or at any other examination of the commission) on any grounds whatsoever.

Candidates should exercise due care while entering their date of birth in column 8 of the application form. if on verification at any subsequent stage, any variation is found in their date of birth from the one entered in their matriculation or equivalent examination certificate, disciplinary action will be taken against them by the commission under the rules.

3. Educational Qualifications

For admission to the examination, a candidate must have

a. obtained a degree in Engineering from a University incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India or other Educational Institutions established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as Universities under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956; or

b. passed Section A and B of the Institution Examinations of the Institution of Engineers (India); or

c. obtained a degree/diploma in Engineering from such foreign University/College/Institution and under such conditions as may be recognised by the Government for the purpose from time to time, or

d. passed Graduate Membership Examination of the Institute of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (India); or

e. passed Associate Membership Examination Parts II and III/Sections A and B of the Aeronautical Society of India; or

f. passed Graduate Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics and Radio Engineers, London held after November, 1959.

Provided that a candidate for the post of Engineer, Group A, in Wireless Planning and Coordination Wing/Monitoring Organisation, Ministry of Communications and Indian Naval Armament Service (Electronics Engineering Posts) may possess any of the above qualifications or the qualification mentioned below namely:-

M.Sc. degree or its equivalent with Wireless Communication, Electronics, Radio Physics or Radio Engineering as a special subject.

A candidate who has appeared at an examination the passing of which would render him educationally qualified for this examination, but has not been informed of the result, may apply for admission to the examination. A candidate who intends to appear at such a qualifying examination may also apply. Such candidates will be admitted to the examination, if otherwise eligible, but their admission would be deemed to be provisional and subject to cancellation, if they do not produce proof of having passed the requisite qualifying examination alongwith the detailed applications which will be required to be submitted by the candidates who qualify on the result of written part of the examination.

In exceptional cases, the Commission may treat a candidate, who has not any of the qualifications prescribed in this rule, as educationally qualified provided that he has passed examinations conducted by other institutions the standard of which in the opinion of the Commission justifies his admission to the examination.
A candidate who is otherwise qualified but who has taken a degree from a foreign University which is not recognised by Government, may also apply to the Commission and may be admitted to the examination at the discretion of the Commission.

4. Physical Requirements for the Disabled Candidates

For being considered against the vacancies reserved for them, the physically disabled persons should have disability of Forty per cent (40%) or more. However, such candidates shall be required to meet one or more of the following physical requirements/abilities which may be necessary for performing the duties in the concerned Services/Posts :

a. Work performed by manipulating (with Fingers)
b. Work performed by pulling & pushing
c. Work performed by lifting
d. Work performed by kneeling and crouching
e. Work performed by bending
f. Work performed by sitting (on bench or chair)
g. Work performed by standing
h. Work performed by walking
i. Work performed by seeing
j. Work performed by hearing/speaking
k. Work performed by reading and writing.

The functional classification in their case shall be, one or more of the following, consistent with the requirements of the concerned Services/Posts :

c. both arms affected

i. impaired reach
ii. weakness of grip.

d. both legs and both arms affected.
e. one leg affected (R or L)

i. impaired reach
ii. weakness of grip
iii. ataxic

f. one arm affected (R or L) - do -
g. stiff back and hips (cannot sit or stoop).
h. muscular weakness and limited physical endurance.
i. the blind
j. partially blind
k. the deaf
l. partially deaf.

Scheme Of The Examination of Engineering Services

1.The examination shall be conducted according to the following plan:-

a. Part I The written examination will comprise two sections Section I consisting only of objective types of questions and Section II of conventional papers. Both Sections will cover the entire syllabus of the relevant engineering disciplines viz. Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering. The standard and syllabi prescribed for these papers are given in Schedule to the Appendix. The details of the written examination i.e. subject, duration and maximum marks allotted to each subject are given in para 2 below.

b. Part II Personality test carrying a maximum of 200 marks of such of the candidates who qualify on the basis of the written examination.

iii. In the Personality Test special attention will be paid to assessing the candidates capacity for leadership, initiative and intellectual curiosity, tact and other social qualities, mental and physical energy, powers of practical application and integrity of character.

iv. Conventional papers must be answered in English. Question papers will be set in English only.

v. Candidates must write the papers in their own hand. In no circumstances will they be allowed the help of a scribe to write the answers for them.

vi. The Commission have discretion to fix qualifying marks in any or all the subjects of the examination.

vii. Marks will not be allotted for mere superficial knowledge.

viii. Deduction up to 5 per cent of the maximum marks for the written papers will be made for illegible handwriting.

ix. Credit will be given for orderly, effective and exact expression combined with due economy of words in the conventional papers of the examination.

x. In the question papers, wherever required, SI units will be used.

Candidates will be supplied with standard tables/charts in SI units in the Examination hall for reference purpose, wherever considered necessary.

xi. Candidates are permitted to bring and use battery operated pocket calculators for conventional (essay) type papers only. Loaning or inter-changing of calculators in the Examination hall is not permitted. It is also important to note that candidates are not permitted to use calculators for answering objective type paper (Test book lets). They should not, therefore, bring the same inside the Examination Hall.

xii. Candidates should use only International form of Indian numerals (e.g. 1,2,3,4,5,6 etc.) while answering question papers.

General Ability Test

a .Part A: General English. The question paper in General English will be designed to test the candidates understanding of English and workmanlike use of words.

b .Part B: General Studies: The paper in General Studies will include knowledge of current events and of such matters as of everyday observation and experience in their scientific aspects as may be expected of an educated person. The paper will also include questions on History of India and Geography of a nature which candidates should be able to answer without special study.

Civil Engineering Paper-I

(For both objective and conventional type papers)

a. Building Materials

Timber : Different types and species of structural timber, density-moisture relationship, strength in different directions, defects, influence of defects on permissible stress, preservation, dry and wet rots, codal provisions for design, Plywood.

Bricks : Types, Indian Standard classification, absorption, saturation factor, strength in masonry, influence of morter strength on masonry strength.

Cement : Compounds of, different types, setting times, strength.

Cement Mortar : Ingredients, proportions, water demand, mortars for plastering and masonry.

Concrete : Importance of W/C Ratio, Strength, ingredients including admixtures, workability, testing for strength, elasticity, non-destructive testing, mix design methods.

b. Solid Mechanics

Elastic constants, stress, plane stress, Mohrs circle of stress, strains, plane strain, Mohrs circle of strain, combined stress; Elastic theories of failure; Simple bending, shear; Torsion of circular and rectangular sections and simple members.

c. Structural Analysis

Analysis of determinate structures - different methods including graphical methods.

Analysis of indeterminate skeletal frames - moment distribution, slope-deflection, stiffness and force methods, energy methods, Muller-Breslau principle and application.

Plastic analysis of indeterminate beams and simple frames - shape factors.

d. Design Of Steel Structures

Principles of working stress method. Design of connections, simple members, Built-up sections and frames, Design of Industrial roofs. Principles of ultimate load design. Design of simple members and frames.

e. Design Of Concrete And Masonry Structures

Limit state design for bending, shear, axial compression and combined forces. Codal provisions for slabs, beams, walls and footings. Working stress method of design of R.C. members.

Principles of prestressed concrete design, materials, methods of prestressing, losses. Design of simple members and determinate structures. Introductions to prestressing of indeterminate structures.

Design of brick masonry as per I.S. Codes.

f. Construction Practice, Planning And Management

Concreting Equipment:
Weight Batcher, Mixer, vibrator, batching plant, concrete pump.

Cranes, hoists, lifting equipment.

Earthwork Equipment :
Power shovel, hoe, dozer, dumper, trailers and tractor, rollers, sheep foot rollers, pumps.

Construction, Planning and Management :
Bar chart, linked bar chart, work-break down structures, Activity - on - arrow diagrams. Critical path, probabilistic activity durations; Event-based networks.
PERT network: Time-cost study, crashing; Resource allocation.

Civil Engineering Paper-II

(For both objective and conventional type papers)

Mechanical Engineering Paper-I

Mechanical Engineering Paper - II

Kinematic and dynamic analysis of planer mechanisms. Cams. Gears and gear trains. Flywheels. Governors. Balancing of rigid rotors and field balancing. Balancing of single and multicylinder engines, Linear vibration analysis of mechanical systems. Critical speeds and whirling of shafts Automatic controls.

b. Machine Design :

Design of Joints : cotters, keys, splines, welded joints, threaded fasteners, joints formed by interference fits. Design of friction drives : couplings and clutches, belt and chain drives, power screws.

Design of Power transmission systems : gears and gear drives shaft and axle, wire ropes.

Combined Medical Services Examination : Eligibility Conditions

1. Nationality

A candidate must be either :

a .a Citizen of India, or
b .a subject of Nepal, or
c .a subject of Bhutan, or
d .a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before the 1st January, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India. or
e .a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka or East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia or from Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (b), (c), (d) and (e) above shall be a person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Govern-ment of India.

A candidate in whose case a certificate of eligibility is necessary, may be admitted to the examination but the offer of appointment may be given only after the necessary eligibility certificate has been issued to him by the Government of India.

2. Age Limit

a. A candidate for this examination must not have attained the age of 32 years as on 1st January, 2005, i.e. the candidate must have been born not earlier than 2nd January, 1973.

b. The upper age limit is relaxable as follows.

i. Upto a maximum of five years if a candidate belongs to a Scheduled Caste or a Scheduled Tribe.

ii. Upto a maximum of three years in the case of candidates belonging to Other Backward Classes who are eligible to avail of reservation applicable to such candidates.

iii. Upto a maximum of five years if a candidate had ordinarily been domiciled in the State of Jammu & Kashmir during the period from the 1st January, 1980 to the 31st day of December, 1989.

iv. Upto a maximum of three years in the case of Defence Services personnel disabled in operations during hostilities with any foreign country or in a disturbed area and released as a consequence thereof.

v. Upto a maximum of five years in the case of Ex-servicemen including Commissioned Officers and ECOs/SSCOs who have rendered at least five years Military Service as on 1st January, 2005 and have been released (i) on completion of assignment (including those whose assignment is due to be completed within one year from 1st January, 2005) otherwise than by way of dismissal or discharge on account of misconduct or inefficiency, or (ii) on account of physical disability attributable to Military Service or (iii) on invalidment.

vi. Upto a maximum of five years in the case of ECOs/SSCOs who have completed an initial period of assignment of 5 years Military Service as on 1st January, 2005 and whose assignment has been extended beyond 5 years and in whose case the Ministry of Defence issues a certificate that they can apply for civil employment and that they will be released on 3 months notice on selection from the date of receipt of offer of appointment.

vii. Upto a maximum of ten years in the case of blind, deaf-mute and Orthopaedically handicapped candidates.

viii. The ad-hoc Doctors appointed after 1.10.1984 in the Ministry of Railways will be granted relaxation in age to the extent of the period of service rendered by them as ad-hoc Doctors in Railways, in the light of the Supreme Courts orders dated the 24th September, 1987 on the Writ Petitions (Nos. 822, 875, 180 & 200 of 1987 with Nos. 370, 298 & 73 of 1987 with Nos. 1165, 1328, 1619, 1735, 1275, 1457, 1087, 1034, 1263, 1294, 1327, 1349, 1370, 1353, 1400, 1451, 1504, 1564, 1650 & 1609 of 1986 and with Nos. 845 of 1986) filed by some ad-hoc Doctors of the Railways. The ad-hoc Doctors claiming the relaxation in upper age limit under this provision should submit their applications for admission to the examination through the Ministry of Railways who will certify that the applicants are covered by the orders of the Supreme Court.

i. Candidates belonging to the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes and the Other Backward Classes who are also covered under any other clauses of para II(b) above, viz. those coming under the category of Ex-servicemen, persons domiciled in the State of J & K, physically handicapped etc. will be eligible for grant of cumulative age-relaxation under both the categories.

ii. The term ex-servicemen will apply to the persons who are defined as ex-servicemen in the Ex-servicemen (Re-employment in Civil Services and Posts) Rules, 1979, as amended from time to time.

iii. The age concession under Para II(b)(v) and (vi) will not be admissible to Ex-servicemen and Commissioned Officers inculding ECOs/SSCOs, who are released on their own request.

iv. Notwithstanding the provision of age-relaxation under para II(b)(vii) above, a physically handicapped candidate will be considered to be eligible for appointment only if he/she (after such physical examination as the on the Government or appointing authority, as the case may be, may prescribe) is found to satisfy the requirements of physical and medical standards for the concerned Services/posts to be allocated to the physically handi-capped candidates by the Government.

Save as provided above the Age-Limit prescribed can in no case be relaxed.

The date of birth accepted by the Commission is that entered in the Matriculation or Secondary School Leaving Certificate or in a certificate recognised by an Indian University as equivalent to Matriculation or in an extract from a Register of Matriculates maintained by a University which must be certified by the proper authority of the University or in the Higher Secondary or an equivalent examination certificate. These certificates are required to be sub-mitted only after the declaration of the result of the written part of the examination.

No other document relating to age like horo-scopes, affidavits, birth extracts from Municipal Corporation, service records and the like will be accepted. The expression Matriculation/Higher Secondary Examina-tion Certificate in this part of the instruction includes the alternative certificate men-tioned above.

i. Candidates should note that only the Date of Birth as recorded in the Matriculation/Higher Secondary Examination Certificate or an equivalent certificate as on the date of submission of applications will be accepted by the Commission and no subsequent request for its change will be considered or granted.

ii. Candidates should also note that once a Date of Birth has been claimed by them and entered in the records of the Commission for the purpose of admission to an Examination, no change will be allowed subsequently (or at any other Examination of the Commission) on any ground what-soever.

iii. The candidate should exercise due care while entering their date of birth in column 8 of the application form. If on verification at any subsequent stage, any variation is found in their date of birth from the one entered in their matriculation or equivalent Examination certificate, disciplinary action will be taken against them by the commission under the Rules.

3. Educational Qualification

For admission to the examination a candidate should have passed the written and practical parts of the final M.B.B.S. Examination.

i. A candidate who has appeared or has yet to appear at the final M.B.B.S. Examination may also apply. Such candidates will be admitted to the examination if otherwise eligible but the admission would be deemed to be provisional and subject to cancellation, if they do not produce proof of having passed the written and practical part of the final M.B.B.S. Examination along with the detailed application which will be required to be submitted to the Commission by the candidates who qualify on the result of the written part of the examination.

ii. A candidate who has yet to complete the compulsory rotating internship is educationally eligible for admission to the examination but on selection he will be appointed only after he has completed the compulsory rotating internship.

Physical Eligibility for Combined Medical Services Examination

Physical Eligibility :

1. For being considered against the vacancies reserved for them, the physically disabled person should have disability of Forty per cent (40%) or more. However, such candidates shall be required to meet one or more of the following physical requirements/abilities which may be necessary for performing the duties in the concerned Services/Posts:-

Scheme of examination of Combined Medical Services

1. The examination will comprise -

a. Written Examination : The candidates will take the examination in the following two papers each of two hours duration each carrying a maximum of 200 marks. The questions in both the papers will be so designed as to give the following weightage to different subjects.

ii. The examination in both the papers will be completely of objective (multiple choice answer) type. The question papers (Test Booklets) will be set in English only.

iii. Candidates must write the papers in their own hand. In no circumstances will they be allowed the help of scribe to write answers for them.

iv. The Commission have discretion to fix qualifying marks for the examination.

v. Candidates are not permitted to use calculators for answering objective type papers (Test Booklets). They should not, therefore, bring the same inside the Examination Hall.

Personality Test :

The interview for Personality Test will be intended to serve as a supplement to the written examination for testing the General Knowledge and ability of the candidates in the fields of their academic study and also in the nature of a personality test to assess the candidates intellectual curiosity, critical powers of assimilation, balance of judgement and alertness of mind, ability for social cohesion, integrity of character, initiative and capability for leadership.

Medical examination of candidates :

All candidates who qualify for personality test on the basis of results of written part of the examination shall be required to undergo physical/medical examination (in two parts) by the Ministry of Health and Family welfare. A candicate who is found not to satisfy the requirements of physical/medical examination will not be appointed.

  • For Officers Training Academy-Male candidates (married or unmarried) born not earlier than 2nd July, 1980 and not later than 1st July, 1986 only are eligible.

In such cases a candidate must send in addition to the attested/certified copy of Matriculation/Higher Secondary Examination Certificate an attested/certified copy of a certificate from the Headmaster/Principal of the Institution from where he passed the Matriculation/Higher Secondary Examination showing the date of his birth or exact age as recorded in the Admission Register of the Institution.

  • Educational Qualifications :
  • For I.M.A. and Officers Training Academy-Degree of a recognised University or equivalent.
  • For Naval Academy : B.Sc. (with Physics & Mathematics) or Bachelor of Engineering.
  • For Air Force Academy : Degree of Recognized University (with Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level) or Bachelor of Engineering.

    Graduates with first choice as Army/Navy/Air Force are to submit proof of graduation provisional certificates on the date of commencement of the SSB Interview at the SSB.

      Note:

    • Candidates, who have yet to pass their degree examination will be eligible only if they are studying in the final year of degree examination. Those candidates who have yet to qualify in the final year Degree Examination and are allowed to appear in the UPSC Examination should note that this is only a special concession given to them. They are required to submit proof of passing the Degree examination by the prescribed date and no request for extending this date will be entertained on the grounds of late conduct of basic qualifying University Examination, delay in declaration of results or any other ground whatsoever.
    • Candidates who are debarred by the Ministry of Defence from holding any type of commission in the Defence Services shall not be eligible for admision to the examination and if admitted, their candidature will be cancelled.
    • In the event of Air Force candidates being suspended from Flying training for failure to learn flying, they would be absorbed in the Navigation/Administration/Logistic Branch of the IAF. This will be subject to availability of vacancies and fulfilling the laid down qualitative requirements (including 60% in graduation)

    • Candidates must be Physically fit According to the prescribed Physical standards. The standards of Medical Fitness and the guidelines for the same are given below.

      A Number of qualified candidates are rejected subsequently on Medical grounds. candidates are therefore advised in their own interest to get themselves medically examined before submitting their applications to avoid disappointment at the final stage.

    ndidate recommended by the Services Selection Board will under go a medical examination by a Board of Service Medical Officers, Only those candidates will be admitted to the Academy who are declared fit by the Medical Board. However, the candidates declared unfit will be intimated by the President of the Medical Board and procedure for request for an Appeal Medical Board (AMB) will also be intimated to the candidate.

    Candidates who are unfit may apply for Appeal Medical Board (AMB) to be completed within 42 days of SMB and may request for Review Medical Board (RMB) within one day of completion of Appeal Medical Board.

    Candidates declared unfit by AMB will be intimated by the President AMB about procedure of challenging the findings of AMB. The candidates will also be intimated that holding Review Medical Board (RMB) will be granted at the discretion of DGAFMS based on the merit of the case and that RMB is not a matter of right. Candidates shall automatically report to the hospital opted by them on any working day, keeping in view, the time taken by Postal authorities to deliver their Medical document at the Hospital for medical examination. No call shall be given by the opted hospital and no correspondence in this regard shall be entertained. The candidate must be physically fit according to the prescribed physical standards which are summarised below :

    1. The candidate must be in good physical and mental health and free form any disease/disability which is likely to interfere with the efficient performance of duties.
    2. There should be no evidence of weak constitution, bodily defects or over weight.
    3. The minimum acceptable height is 157.5 cms. (157 cms for Navy and 162.5 cms for Air Force). For Gorkhas and individuals belonging to hills of north Eastern region of India, Garhwali and Kumaon, the Minimum acceptable height will be 5 cms less. In case of candidates from Lakshadweep, the minimum acceptable height can be reduced by 2 cms.

      A + 10% (for Navy) departure from the average weight given in the Table above is to be considered within normal limit. However, in individuals with heavy bones and broad built as well as individuals with thin but otherwise healthy this may be relaxed to some extent on merit.

      The acceptable weight for Air Force candidates will be + 10% of the average weight given above.

    4. In your own interest your are advised to undergo a preliminary medical check up for wax in ears, refractory error of eyes, fungal infection of skin Eosinophitia before reporting for the SSB interview.
    5. Chest should be well developed. The minimum range of expansion after full inspiration should be 5 cms. The measurement will be taken with a tape so adjusted that its lower edge should touch the nipple in front and the upper part of the tape should touch the lower angle of the shoulder blades behind. X-Ray of the chest is compulsory and will be taken to rule out any disease of the chest.
    6. There should be no disease of bones and joints of the body.
    7. A candidate should have no past history of mental breakdown or fits.
    8. The hearing should be normal. A candidate should be able to hear a forced whisper with each ear at a distance of 610 cms. in a quiet room. There should be no evidence of present or past disease of the ear, nose and throat.
    9. There should be no sign of functional or organic disease of the heart and blood vessel. Blood pressure should be normal.
    10. The muscles of abdomen should be well developed and there should be no enlargement of liver or spleen. Any evidence of disease of internal organs of the abdomen will be a cause for rejection.
    11. Un-operated hernias will make a candidate unfit. If operated, this should have been done at least 1 year prior to the present examination and healing is completed.
    12. There should be no hydrocele, varicocele or piles.
    13. Urine examination will be done and any abnormality, if detected will be a cause for rejection.
    14. Any disease of the skin which is likely to cause disability or disfigurement will also be a cause for rejection.
    15. A candidate should be able to read 6/6 in a distant vision chart with each eye with or without glasses (For navy and Air Force without glasses only) Myopia should not be more than 3.5D and hypermetropia not more than 3.5D including Astigmatism. Internal examination of the eye will be done by means of ophthalmoscope to rule out any disease of the eye. A candidate must have good binocular vision. The colour vision standard will be CP-3. A candidate should be able to recognise red and green colours.

      Radial keratotomy : Candidates who have undergone or have the evidence of having undergone Radial Keratotomy, to improve the visual acuity, will be permanently rejected for all the three services. Candidates who have undergone Laser Surgery for correction of refractive error are also not acceptable to defence services.

      The candidates for Navy should have the following vision standards :

      Distant vision 6/12 , 6/12, Correctable to 6/6 Near Vision N-5 each eye

      Colour Vision CP-1 by MLT

      Myopia is not to exceed 0.75 dioptres and hypermetropia not more than 1.50 dioptres in the better eye and 2.50 dioptres in the worse eye.

      Ocular Muscle Balance

      Hetrophoria with the Maddox Rod Test must not exceed.

      • At 6 metres Exophoria 8 prism dioptres, Esophoria 8 prism dioptres, Hyperphoria 1 prism diop-tres.
      • at 30 cm Exophoria 16 prism dioptres, Esophoria 6 prism dioptres, Hyperphoria 1 prism dioptres.

      dates should have sufficient number of natural and sound teeth. A minimum of 14 dental points will be acceptable. When 32 teeth are present, the total dental points are 22. A candidate should not be suffering form severe pyorrhoea.

    16. X-Ray examination of the chest will include the lower part of cervical spine for presence of cervical ribs. X-Ray examination of other parts of spine will be taken if the SMB considers it necessary.

    • More than mild Kyphosis/Lordosis, Scolosis more than 15 by Cobb’s method will be cause for rejection.

    • Herniated Nucleus Pulposus.
    • Compression fracture of Vertebra.
    • Scheuermanns Disease
    • Cervical Ribs with demonstrable neurological or circulatory deficit.
    • Presence of Schmorl’s node at more than one level.

    • Incomplete Sacralisation unilateral or Bilateral.
    • Any other abnormality, if so considered by specialist.
