Want separate examinations for rain affected districts
For the third time, semester examinations of Anna University have been poned due to rain and threat of cyclone. While the universitys concern over whether candidates will be able to reach the examination centres in time in the adverse weather is understandable in the coastal districts, students and their parents in other parts of the State, unaffected by the rain, are seething. Why cant the university, with its huge infrastructure, conduct a separate examination for the rain affected districts? Salem, Coimbatore, Erode, Tiruchi or Madurai have not been really affected by the latest spell of rain, but students are forced to prepare for the same subject for the third time this semester, laments a parent, Mr. Ilangovan, from Salem. His daughter and several other students in districts not affected by rain are demanding a change in the examination administration system of Anna University. It has nearly 240 colleges across the State. These regions get rain at different times during the year but the university makes no differentiation, they point out. Final year engineering and management students are most affected by the repeated postponements. They had finalised dates for undergoing industry internship and final year project work. Now, with the examination dates extended, they are in a fix. The industry or banks do not agree to a change of schedule easily. A management student in Chennai, who has is to intern with a nationalised bank branch in Mylapore and also has a project fixed up there, says he would not be able to undergo the training. The change in schedule is bound to affect the academic schedule for the next semester (January-April). This could delay the semester examination and lead to academic delays next year. This being an election year, it compounds the problem. An Anna university official said they were aware of the problem and considering dividing the university jurisdiction into different zones Each zone could decide independently on the examination dates, depending on the ground situation.
