In a major move to improve science education and attract more students at post-graduation level, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) here has mooted collaborative academic programme with Maharashtras oldest science institute. Initial discussions took place between technical higher education department of Maharashtra government and the IIT here last week. However, a memorandum of understanding in this regard is yet to be finalised, Vivek V Rane, Director of Institute of Science, told PTI today. The Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) conducted for admissions into Ramaiah IIT coaching institute would be held on May 6 from 8.30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at five centres in Hyderabad. Legislative Council member Chukka Ramaiah said, Mathematics paper would be held from 8.30 a.m. to 10.30 a.m., Physics from 11 a.m. to 12 noon and Chemistry from 12 noon to 1 p.m. The papers would carry 60 marks each. The Indian Institute of Technology- Madras will create a centre of excellence to train off-highway design engineers, with financial assistance from a US company. The centre will be called Caterpillar Centre of Excellence for off-highway engineering and would come under the Department of Engineering Design, IIT. Aspire Learning Company has announced the Aspire Admission-Cum-Scholarship Test for students currently in Classes VI to XII. It will be conducted across south India on May 20. The State Government has allotted 11 acres of land sought by the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT-M) for setting up a research park, through a government order recently. The plans and other financial arrangements for the building are ready and the project is expected to start soon. In 2003, IIT-Madras had asked for 12 acres in Taramani and the State Government allotted 6.59 acres in 2005. The IIT-M sought additional land to improve its connection with the IT corridor and also construct an 18-m access road. This 18 m road would enable IIT-M to construct a multi-storied building. The conflict between the Council of Architecture (CoA) and the Ministry of Human Resource Development over the authority on admissions into Architecture colleges is snowballing into a major controversy even as the admissions in the State are set to begin on August 27. The CoA has frozen admissions in three of the seven Architecture colleges in the State citing the reason that they had not facilitated inspection for the courses for 2007-2008. These colleges include School of Planning & Architecture, JNTU, Hyderabad; School of Architecture of Andhra University, Visakhapatnam and the Sri Venkateshwara College of Architecture, Hyderabad.
