IIM-B To Increase Seats, Start Virtual Classrooms Exams in India

The Indian Institute of Management-Bangalore (IIM-B) is on a roll: it is increasing student intake for all courses, starting next year. In line with the vision document prepared by three IIM-B professors, the institute has decided to increase seats for both the two-year post-graduate programme in management (PGPM) and post-graduate programme in public policy and management (PGPPPM).For the next academic year, the number of seats for PGPPPM will go up from 30 to45. It will admit more students for its regular PGPM too. Though it has already increased the seats from 180 to 234 this year, the institute will add another section in 2007 taking the number of students to over 300. Construction of a 160-room hostel is also-in progress. The IIM-B vision document prepared by three professors S Sunderarajan, R Ravikumar and Rishikesha T Krishnan says: “We (IIM-B) will ensure that no one is denied access to our PGP due to financial constraints. To enable pursuit of our vision vigorously, we will build a strong financial foundation through healthy internal generation, external funding support and efficient resource management.” After taking the post-graduate programme in software management to Chennai in June this year, IIM-B will start virtual classrooms in Hyderabad, using interactive television mode. It will be a two-year general management programme for mid-career software professionals with a set of management courses and electives. IIM-B has tied up with Infosys to conduct classes in Chennai using two-way video and audio facilities. To reach senior managers and board members, a team of IIM-B faculty was trained in Washington under the Centre for Corporate Governance and Citizenship. ‘This will enable IIM-B to train directors who are on different boards. In association with McGill and Lancaster, we offered an Advanced Leadership Programme for senior managers. The vision document has suggested that the institute focus on executive education as their number had gone up by 26% in just one year,” a member of the Board of Governors said.
