IISER gets land for permanent campus Exams in India

Ten months after the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, laid the foundation stone for the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Kolkata, the institute yesterday received more than 200 acres from the state government for setting up its permanent campus at Haringhata here.

In a formal ceremony, the Nadia district magistrate, Mr Onkar Singh Meena, on behalf of the state government handed over 201.65 acres in Haringhata mouza to the institutes director, Professor Sushanta Dattagupta, in exchange of Re 1 as token money.

Prof Dattagupta said at the ceremony that the permanent campus had been proposed at Haringhata after detailed survey and discussion with officials of the higher education, animal resource development and land and land reforms departments of West Bengal. I hope the campus can be started from next year, he said.

IIT-M gets land for research park

The State Government has allotted 11 acres of land sought by the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT-M) for setting up a research park, through a government order recently. The plans and other financial arrangements for the building are ready and the project is expected to start soon. In 2003, IIT-Madras had asked for 12 acres in Taramani and the State Government allotted 6.59 acres in 2005. The IIT-M sought additional land to improve its connection with the IT corridor and also construct an 18-m access road. This 18 m road would enable IIT-M to construct a multi-storied building. Who will man the additional IITs?

In recent months at least two new institutes named as Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) modelled after IISc have been inaugurated. This is justifiable since science education and research badly needs a good boost as the country produces enough PhDs in sciences to staff these new institutions. May deadline for IIT Cuttack, Bhubaneswar plan

The 10-member panel of urban design experts of the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT-Kgp) will submit the Perspective Plan - Vision 2030, for the development of the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack by the end of May 2007, according to the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA).
