A final year student of the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati, (IIT-G) has been missing since last week, IIT-G officials said here on Monday. The Union Cabinet late on Thursday approved a proposal to amend the Constitution to restore reservation for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in unaided private professional educational institutions.The Constitution Amendment Bill 2005 would be introduced in the winter session of Parliament, Union parliamentary affairs minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunshi told mediapersons. The amendment would enable the states to make reservation of seats for socially and educationally backward classes or for SCs and STs in educational institutions including unaided private professional educational bodies, other than minority institutions, and to regulate their admission and fee, he said. The All-India Council for Technical Education, which regulates professional institutes, has decided to reduce student intake in colleges, which does not have adequate faculty members. Out of the total 38,101 seats slashed this year, 25,335 are in engineering, 8,229 in MCA, 3,016 in MBA and post-graduate diploma in business management (PGDBM) and 1,521 in pharmacy courses, The all-India student intake for engineering (in AICTE-approved institutes) is going to be 4,52,260 this year against the 4,77,595 seats sanctioned last year. Heena, a student of B.Com in Khalsa College for Women (KCW), has topped the mock CAT-cum-scholarship test conducted by Bulls Eye in various cities including Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Ambala, Patiala, Bathinda and Shimla today. A senior officer at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Kharagpur has accused the institute of suspending him for using the Right to Information Act to point out alleged irregularities in the appointment of top administrators.
