The Railways have a proposal to revamp the security arrangement at the railway stations in Northern Railway. Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi has been assigned the task of carrying out a security audit of Delhi Main Junction Railways Station with a view to prepare a composite security plan.
The above mentioned project is a sort of pilot project. For the first time such a project has been assigned to IIT, Delhi by the Indian Railways. The terms and conditions specified by the Indian Institute of Technology for taking up this project have been accepted by the Railways and a Liaison Officer has been nominated from the Railways for day to day co-ordination. Further action will be taken by the Railways on receipt of the report.
This information was given by Shri R. Velu, Minister of State for Railways in a written reply to a question in Lok Sbha today.

In a bid to revamp security, Northern Railways has sought help from IIT-Delhi to carry out an extensive survey of its railway stations.
Project in-charge Professor DT Sahni today led a team to see how security can be strengthened at the Old Delhi Railway Station.
A senior railway official said: The Railways are 150 years old and not well-equipped to cope with any terror attack. Especially after the Samjhauta Express blasts, we felt the need for a comprehensive relook at security scenario.

Against the backdrop of the Samjhauta Express blasts, the Northern Railway and IIT-Delhi have joined hands to revamp security at important railway stations to prevent any future terror attacks.
There is an urgent need to look up at all these stations especially after the Samjhauta blasts since many of these are too old and do not have the complete security arrangements as they were not built in accordance with that, CPRO Rajeev Saxena said.
He said a team of experts, led by Prof D T Sahni from IIT-Delhi, has been constituted to carry out a security audit in the Railways.

Rattled by the blasts in the Samjhauta Express and the loss of innocent lives in that incident, the Railways has sought the help of experts to revamp and overhaul the entire security set -up and system at the Railway stations and inside the trains.
