Course: PhD (Development Studies)

Description: PhD (Development Studies) This is interdisciplinary programmes commencing August 2007.

Minimum qualification: MA/ MSc in Economics/ MStat/ MSc (Physics, Mathematics, Environmental Science or Operations Research)/ MBA/ MTech/ ME/ BTech/ BE with at least 55% aggregate marks for Economics discipline and 60% aggregate marks for other disciplines. The applicant must have studied Mathematics at the higher secondary level.

Stipend: PhD: Students receive a monthly stipend of Rs.8000/- in the first two years. Those, students, who fulfill the terms and conditions for Ph.D. registration, would receive a monthly stipend of Rs.9000/- after PhD registration in the third year.

Selection Procedure: Candidates will be selected on the basis of their performance in a written test and an interview. The written test emphasizes general aptitude, analytical ability and mathematical skills. The test will be held on April 29, 2007 at the following centres: Bangalore, Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad,. Jaipur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, New Delhi and Thiruvananthapuram.

The test venue will be notified in the call letter. Based on the performance in the written test, short listed candidates will be called for an interview at IGIDR around the first week of July 2007. Second class return rail fare by the shortest route from the place of residence will be paid to the candidates interviewed. The decision of the selection committee will be final.

How To Apply:

Application forms and prospectus may be purchased from the Institute by paying cash on all working days or via post by sending a bank draft of Rs.200 (non-refundable) payable to Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR) at Mumbai to the Admissions Office, IGIDR, Gen. A.K. Vaidya Marg, Goregaon (East), Mumbai 400 065 (E-mail: soffice@igidr.ac.in). Payment in any other form will not be accepted. The request for the application form in plain paper, along with the candidate’s name, date of birth, sex, address, academic qualifications, choice of test centre must reach IGIDR by March 15, 2007.

Reservation: Reservation for SC/ST will be as per rules prescribed by the UGC for the Central Universities. SC/ST applicants need not submit any application fee but are required to enclose a copy of the Caste Certificate along with their request for application form. Those SC/ST applicants submitting forms downloaded from the website are required to attach a copy of the Caste Certificate.
