Jadavpur University, stung by the medical entrance scam, has threatened to sever ties with the state joint entrance examination (JEE) system. But before it carries out its threat, the university wants to give the state government a chance by submitting a list of proposals to overhaul the faulty system, which it wants the JEE board to accept in full. The university, rated one of the countrys best five by the University Grants Commission, feels it cannot maintain a high academic standard if it keeps admitting students to the engineering courses through the JEE. President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam will Thursday lay the foundation stone for a research centre at the premier Indian Institute of Technology at Kharagpur and later visit a school for spastics here. Kalam, who arrived here late Wednesday night, will inaugurate the B.C. Roy Multi-Speciality Research Centre at IIT-Kharagpur, about 125 km west of Kolkata, and also deliver a lecture there. The wait for more IIT -level engineering colleges is set to get longer. For the time being at least, the ministry of human resource developments plan of upgrading five engineering colleges may have been stymied by the state governments. We are already recognized as one of Indias finest engineering institutions and have decided to introduce management courses to open better placement avenues for our engineers, Partha Pratim Biswas, a member of the universitys executive council, said on Monday.
