PAPER -I

Answers must be written in Marathi.

Section A - Language and Folklore

(a) Nature and Functions of Language (with reference to Marathi) Language as a signifying system: Langue and Parole; Basic functions; Poetic language; Standard Language and dialect; Language variations according to social parameters.

Linguistic features of Marathi in thirteen century and seventeenth century.

(b) Dialects of Marathi
Ahirani; Varhadi; Dangi

Section B - History of Literature and Literary Criticism

(a) History of Marathi Literature
1. From beginning to 1818 A.D., with special reference to the following: The Mahanubhava writers, the Varkari poets, the Pandit poets, the Shahirs, Bakhar literature.

2. From 1850 to 1990, with special reference to developments in the following major forks: Poetry, Fiction (Novel and Short Story), Drama; and major literary currents and movements, Romantic, Realist, Modernist, Dalit Grammin, Feminist.

(b) Literary Criticism
1. Nature and function of Literature;

2. Evaluation of Literature;

3. Nature, Objectives and Methods of Criticism;

4. Literature, Culture and Society.

PAPER -II

Answers must be written in Marathi. Textual study of prescribed literary works
The paper will require first-hand reading of the texts prescribed and will be designed to test the candidates critical ability.

Plan of Civil Services Examination

The Civil Services Examination consists of two successive stages: (i) Civil Services Preliminary Examination (Objective type) for the selection of candidates for the Main Examination; and (ii) Civil Services Main Exam. (Written & Interview) for selection of candidates for the various services and posts noted below. After appearing at the Preliminary Exam., candidates who are declared successful to have qualified for admission to the Main Exam, (held during October/November) have to apply again, in the detailed application form which is supplied to them. Scheme Of The Examination for Combined Matric Preliminary Exam

The Combined Matric Prelim. Exam. is to test for selection of candidates for the Main Examination for the different categories of posts mentioned in first paragraph. Restrictions on applying for Civil Services Examination

(a) A candidate who is appointed to the Indian Administrative Service or the Indian Foreign Service on the results of an earlier examination and continues to be a member of that Service will not be eligible to compete at this examination. In case such a candidate is appointed to the IAS/IFS after the Preliminary Examination of Civil Service Examination, is over and he/she continues to be a member of that service, he/she shall not be eligible to appear in the Civil Services Main Examination notwithstanding h^/her having qualified in the Preliminary Examination. General Instructions Preliminary and Main Examination

(i) Candidates must write the papers in their own hand. In no circumstances, will they be allowed the help of a scribe to write the answers for them. However, blind candidates will be allowed to write the examination with the help of a scribe.
