(Pali Language)

N.B. All answers must be written in Pali language in Devanagari or Roman Script.

Section-A

There will be two compulsory questions which must be answered in Pali Language in Devanagari or Roman Script. The remaining questions must be attempted either in Pali or in the medium of exam, opted by the candidate.

Section-A

(i) Life and teachings of Buddha from the Pali sources,

(ii) History of Pali Literature-Canonical and Non-Canonical with reference to the following books and authors:

Mahavagga, Cullavagga, Patimokkha, Digha-Nikaya, Dhammapada, Jataka, Theragatha, Therigatha. Dipavamsa, Mahavamsa, Dathavamsa, Sasanavamsa, Milindapanha, Petakopadesa, Nettippa-karana, Buddhadatta, Buddhaghosa and Dhammapala.

Secrion-B

1. Textual questions, critical comments and annotated translations would be asked from the following prescribed texts :-

(i) Digha-Nikaya (Only the Samannaphala-Sutta)

(ii) Sutta-nipata (Only the Khaggavisana-Sutta and Dhaniya-Sutta)

(iii) Dhammapada (Only the first five Vagga-s)

(iv) Milindapanha (Only the Lakkhana-panha)

(v) Mahavamsa (Only the Tatiya-Sangiti)

(vi) Abhidhammattha-sangaha (First, Second and Sixth Chapters)

(vii) Pali Prosody: Vuttodaya-Anutthubha, Indavajira, Upendavajira, Vasantatilaka, Malini, Sikharini, Upajati, totaka, Dodhaka, Vamsattha.

(viii) Pali Rhetoric : Subodhalankara -Yamaka, Anuppasa, Rupaka, Upama, Attsayutti, Vyatireka, Nidassana, Atthanta-ranyasa. Dipaka, Ditthanta.

2. Short Notes on Buddhist concepts dealt within the prescribed texts.

Plan of Civil Services Examination

The Civil Services Examination consists of two successive stages: (i) Civil Services Preliminary Examination (Objective type) for the selection of candidates for the Main Examination; and (ii) Civil Services Main Exam. (Written & Interview) for selection of candidates for the various services and posts noted below. After appearing at the Preliminary Exam., candidates who are declared successful to have qualified for admission to the Main Exam, (held during October/November) have to apply again, in the detailed application form which is supplied to them. The Combined Matric Prelim. Exam. is to test for selection of candidates for the Main Examination for the different categories of posts mentioned in first paragraph. The written exam. will comprise one paper with two parts.   Test Marks Time allowed Part I General Intelligence 100 2 Hrs Part II General Awareness 100 2 Hrs Note :- The questions in all the tests will be "Objective Multiple-Choice-Type". Restrictions on applying for Civil Services Examination

(a) A candidate who is appointed to the Indian Administrative Service or the Indian Foreign Service on the results of an earlier examination and continues to be a member of that Service will not be eligible to compete at this examination. In case such a candidate is appointed to the IAS/IFS after the Preliminary Examination of Civil Service Examination, is over and he/she continues to be a member of that service, he/she shall not be eligible to appear in the Civil Services Main Examination notwithstanding h^/her having qualified in the Preliminary Examination. General Instructions Preliminary and Main Examination

(i) Candidates must write the papers in their own hand. In no circumstances, will they be allowed the help of a scribe to write the answers for them. However, blind candidates will be allowed to write the examination with the help of a scribe.
