Description: Doctoral research under the following Streams: Stream-I: Physics: (Theoretical Physics & Complex Systems, Space & Atmospheric Sciences and Quantum Optics & Quantum Information); Stream-II: Astronomy & Astrophysics (Infrared, Sub-mm & Radio Astronomy) and Solar Physics; Stream-Ill: Planetary & Geosciences.

For Stream-I: MSc in Physics/ Space Sciences/ Atmospheric Sciences. Engineering students with ME/ MTech degree (in Electronics and Communication, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, & Mechanical Engineering) shall also be considered eligible to pursue PhD programme in this Stream;
For Stream-ll: MSc in Physics/ Astronomy/ Astrophysics/ Space Sciences.
For Stream-III: MSc in Physics, Chemistry (Physical/ Nuclear/ Analytical), Geology/ Geophysics/ Oceanography/Marine Sciences.
For all the three Streams, a minimum of 55% marks at Master’s level and Physics & Mathematics at BSc level (for Engineering students at BE/ BTech level) are compulsory. Candidates should have at least a first class either at graduation or post-graduation level.
Age limit: 26 years as on August 1, 2006, which may be relaxed in exceptional cases. Those appearing for Master’s Degree examination in 2006 are also eligible to apply.
Selection Procedure: Written test will be followed by personal interview for screened in candidates. These will be held at the PRL main campus at Ahmedabad. Written test may be waived for the following category of candidates:
For Streams-I and II: Candidates who qualified any one of the following three:
(I) GATE (in Physics/ Engineering) in 2005/ 2006, with rank 95 percentile or higher;
(II) JEST-2006, with rank 95 percentile or higher;
(III) UGC-CSIR NET in 2004/2005 (in Subject Code-5: Physical Sciences).
For Stream-III: candidates who qualified UGC-CSIR NET in 2004/ 2005 in Subject Code-1: Chemical Sciences or Subject Code-2: Earth, Atmospheric, Ocean & Planetary Sciences, or Subject Code-5: Physical Sciences, or GATE (in Physics) in 2005/ 2006 with rank 95 percentile or higher, or JEST-2006, with rank 95 precentile or higher.
A photocopy of result of the GATE/ NET certificate must accompany the application, if applicable. Candidate who qualifies JEST-2006 should mention their roll number and percentile.
How To Apply:
Applications are to be made in the prescribed form which can be downloaded from website or may be obtained on request by post by enclosing a self-addressed envelope with postal stamps of Rs. 10/- affixed on it. Candidates should clearly mention the choice of the Stream in the application (not more than two in the order of preference.)

Stipend & Facilities: Rs. 8,000/- per month, raised to Rs. 9,000/- per month after two years subject to satisfactory progress, a book grant of Rs. 5000/- per year for four years and accommodation on a nominal charge.
