Study Centres Of Distant Universities Illegal: Sc Exams in India

If you are taking a professional course through a study centre affiliated to a distant university, then you are at risk. The Supreme Court on Monday said that such arms of a university that existed beyond the territorial jurisdiction of the parent institution were not allowed under the law Dismissing a bunch of petitions filed by study centres affiliated to various government universities of Uttar Pradesh, a Bench comprising Chief Justice R C Lahoti and Justices G P Mathur and P K Balasubramnyan said the only way the study centres could save the careers of unsuspecting students was to shift their location to a place within the territorial jurisdiction of the parent university. Repeated pleas ranging from students’ career to the possibility of finding a solution to the vexed issue evoked no sympathy from the Bench which was firm that in the absence of a specific notification allowing the university, like IGNOU, to carry on distant education, no institution could be in a position to offer professional courses at a place far away from the location of the parent body. All these study centres which are going on in the name of education have to stop. How are they established outside the state? These are the source of corruption in education, the Bench observed citing one-room establishments advertising award of professional degrees from universities located in far away states.
