Jadavpur University, stung by the medical entrance scam, has threatened to sever ties with the state joint entrance examination (JEE) system.

But before it carries out its threat, the university wants to give the state government a chance by submitting a list of proposals to overhaul the faulty system, which it wants the JEE board to accept in full.

The university, rated one of the countrys best five by the University Grants Commission, feels it cannot maintain a high academic standard if it keeps admitting students to the engineering courses through the JEE.

IIT fights in-house vendetta charge

A senior officer at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Kharagpur has accused the institute of suspending him for using the Right to Information Act to point out alleged irregularities in the appointment of top administrators.

Kalo Boran Mahapatra has complained to the Central Information Commission (CIC) that IIT Kharagpur suspended him last July after he asked for documents that he claims would have revealed that the selected candidates were not qualified for the posts.

IIT officials, however, said Mahapatra was suspended because of a complaint they had received from income-tax authorities that he had drawn an advance to build a house but had not constructed it.

Students must get admission to colleges

Come July-August and Delhi University reverberates with the excitement of students mapping out their careers. However, how many of those seek admission are actually interested in higher education? Most of them join because it is the right thing to do and their parents want them to do so.

Majority of the students are burnt out - first giving their Xth board and then their XIIth board exam. There is a lot of pressure and as the exams near the tension mounts. parents also push their children to limits beyond. There is a reason for this -if you get anything less than a 90 per cent you will not get admission in the so called elite college.

The cut off for courses is so high that only the best of the best make it, causing frustration and disappointment to many. This does not mean that those who have secured 65 per cent are not intelligent. In fact some studies show that it is the middle rankers who perform better than the academic toppers when it comes to their professional life. While those who top may opt out for research and higher studies, it is the middle order students who perform exceedingly well on the career front.

Punjab becoming education hub

Students are less likely to smoke if their high schools are near stores that sell high-priced cigarettes, have few in-store cigarette promotions and post health warnings, suggests a University of British Columbia-led study.

The survey of 81 schools in five provinces was published in the July-August issue of the Canadian Journal of Public Health.

It examined retail stores within a one-kilometre radius of schools in British Columbia, Manitoba, Newfoundland, Ontario and Quebec.
