Description: Master of Design (MDes) programmes starting in August 2007.

Eligibility:
a) 4-year Bachelors degree or equivalent in Design, Engineering, Architecture, Interior Design or a Design related field.
OR
a) 4 year Professional Diploma in Design of NID or Professional Diploma of CEPT (5-year programme)
b) A minimum of 55% marks or equivalent grades (50% marks in case of SC/ST candidates) in the qualifying degree/diploma.
c) All candidates must possess a valid score of All India Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED).
Selection: The Institute reserves the right to call a limited number of candidates for written test or/and interview/portfolio review, based on performance in GATE/NET/CEED, grades/marks in the qualifying examination, etc.

For PhD: Science
a) Masters degree in the relevant discipline with a first class or a minimum of 60% marks or a C.P.I. of 6.5 or equivalent and a valid GATE score or NET qualification.
For PhD: Engineering
General qualifications:
a) MTech degree or equivalent in an appropriate area with minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% marks, OR
b) BTech degree or equivalent in an appropriate area with a CPI of at least 8.00 or 75% marks and a valid GATE score,
OR
c) BTech degree from an IIT in an appropriate area with a CPI of at least 8.0 with or without a GATE score.
Specific requirements in addition to above for some departments/centres:
d) For PhD in Biotechnology, (i) MTech in Biotechnology/ Biochemical Engg./Chemical Engg. or related disciplines or MPharm with minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% marks OR (ii) BTech in Biotechnology/ Biochemical Engg./Chemical Engg. or related disciplines or BPharm, with minimum 8.00 CPI or 75% marks and with a valid GATE score OR iii) MSc in Biotechnology/ Molecular Biology/ Biochemistry/Microbiology/Life Sciences/ Agricultural Sciences/Chemistry/ related disciplines with minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% marks and a valid qualification of GATE/NET/equivalent test conducted by ICAR/ICMR.
e) For PhD in Environment, (i) MTech/BTech in Environmental / Chemical /Civil Engg, Biotechnology, Atmospheric Sciences, Applied Mathematics), OR (ii) MSc (as in a) above) in Atmospheric Sciences with Mathematics, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Environmental Sciences, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology, OR (iii) M Des/M Arch with at least 6.5 CPI or 60% marks or BDes/BArch of IITs with at least 8.0 CPI OR (iv) for the area of Environmental Economics, MA/MSc in Economics with Specialization in Econometrics/ Environmental Economics with at least 55% marks or equivalent with valid NET
f) For PhD in Nanotechnology, Eligibility: i)M. Tech/B. Tech in Computer Science, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical engineering, Biotechnology, Materials Science, Metallurgy, Instrumentation, Aerospace Engineering, Petrochemical Engineering and allied areas with general qualifications for PhD in Engineering as specified above. OR (ii) M Sc in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Medical Sciences and Instrumentation with general qualifications for PhD in Science as specified above
g) For PhD in Energy, (i) MTech/BTech in Mechanical /Chemical/Civil /Agricultural /Electrical Engg. or in relevant field OR (ii) MSc (as in a) above) in Physics, Chemistry, Biotechnology, Environmental Science or in relevant field.
For PhD: Design
a. MDes with a minimum CPI of 6.5, or equivalent Masters degree in a Design related area such as Architecture, Engineering (Product Design Engineering/Industrial Design Engineering), Physiology/ Psychology/Ergonomics, Fine Arts (Digital/Computer graphics) with minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% marks and a valid GATE/NET/CEED score.
b. B.Des/B.Arch/B.Tech(Comp. Sc./Mechanical) from IITs with minimum 8 CPI without GATE/ CEED score requirements.
c. B.Des degree or equivalent in a Design related area with minimum CPI of 8.00 or 75% marks with valid GATE/ CEED score.
d. NID Post-Graduate Diploma Program in Design (PGDPD) with a basic first class engineering/ BFA degree.
Valid CEED/GATE/NET scores are necessary for all candidates except sponsored and self financed candidates.
For PhD: Humanities & Social Sciences
