The wait for more IIT -level engineering colleges is set to get longer. For the time being at least, the ministry of human resource developments plan of upgrading five engineering colleges may have been stymied by the state governments. These institutes, to be known as Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), are existing engineering colleges which the Centre will fund and upgrade to the same level as the IITs. The CBSE has started two merit-based scholarships for professional studies (medical and engineering) and another for undergraduate studies (non-medical and non-engineering). These scholarships are self-selective. Meritorious students of the AIPMT/AIEEE and Class XII public examinations, conducted by the board 2005 onwards, will be automatically considered. They would be valid for any other scholarship or benefit as well.
